We will focus on the techniques you can deploy to improve the health of your garden soil and as a result the quality of your fruits and vegetables. What are the characteristics of a healthy soil and what is the role of “Soil Organic Matter” in building healthy garden soils? Bruce will try to tease out how results “No Till” farmland research can inform your garden soil improvement process. We will review the common techniques of soil improvement ranging from extreme no till to the disruption of “Double Dig,” all of which try to preserve and increase soil organic matter and their drawbacks. Ending with a description of Bruce’s process of garden soil improvement.

In cooperation with the OSU Extension Service, the Washington County Master Gardener Association (WCMGA) provides relevant, research-based education and outreach to the public about horticulture and household pests. The Washington County Master Gardener Association (WCMGA) sponsors a wide variety of gardening–related demonstrations, lectures, seminars and workshops in various Washington County Oregon locations. Most of our events are free and open to the public. The WCMGA is a 501c3 non-profit supported by hundreds of volunteers, who work to educate the public about sustainable, affordable gardening.
