*ARBORVITAE AND THEIR LOOKALIKES: Identification and Natural History
FREE. Advance registration required.
What is the difference between true Arborvitae (Thuja spp.) and false Arborvitae (Chamaecyparis spp.)? What is the difference between false cedars (Thuja spp. and Chamaecyparis spp.) and true cedars (Cedrus spp.)? In this webinar, Elizabeth Price will disentangle the confusing naming conventions for these groups of conifers. She will also highlight foliage and cone characteristics for quickly differentiating among these notoriously difficult-to-identify conifers.
Price will also discuss the fascinating natural history of these plants, including: Why Arborvitae were named the “tree of life” or “Arbre de Vie” by early explorers and why a warming climate is causing Alaska-cedars to die of the cold.

In collaboration with and in support of the OSU Extension Service Master Gardener Program, the Washington County Master Gardener Association (WCMGA) provides relevant, research-based education and outreach to the public about horticulture and household pests. This information promotes sustainable practices that minimize risks to human health and the environment. WCMGA sponsors a wide variety of gardening–related demonstrations, lectures, seminars and workshops in various Washington County Oregon locations. Most of our events are free and open to the public. The WCMGA is a 501c3 non-profit supported by hundreds of volunteers, who work to educate the public about sustainable, affordable gardening.
